What Are Loan Origination Fees?
An origination fee is a processing fee retained by the U.S. government when you take out a federal student loan. It is not a separate charge you pay upfront; rather, it is deducted from the loan amount before the funds are disbursed to your school or account.

How Fees Are Deducted from Disbursement
The origination fee is deducted before the loan disburses to your student account. This means the amount you receive is lower than the gross loan amount you borrowed. For example, a $5,500 Direct Subsidized or Unsubsidized Loan would result in a disbursement of approximately $5,442 after the 1.057% fee. For a $5,500 Direct PLUS Loan, the disbursement would be approximately $5,268 after the 4.228% fee.
| Loan Type | Gross Loan Amount | Origination Fee | Net Disbursement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized | $5,500 | 1.057% | $5,442 |
| Direct PLUS (Parent/Graduate) | $5,500 | 4.228% | $5,268 |

Fees on Total Loan Cost
The origination fee is added to the principal loan amount, meaning you repay it as part of your loan balance and pay interest on it over the life of the loan. This increases the total cost of borrowing beyond the amount you actually receive.
Fees
While origination fees are set by the federal government, you can reduce their impact by borrowing only what you need. Since the fee is a percentage of the loan amount, a smaller loan means a smaller fee. Additionally, any future legislative changes that eliminate or reduce these fees could lower costs for new borrowers.

Waivers
As of the research date, no waivers are in effect for origination fees. However, legislative proposals in the 119th Congress aim to change the landscape. The Student Loan Tax Elimination Act (S.3538) would eliminate origination fees on all Federal Direct Loans for first disbursements on or after the July 1 following its enactment. Another bill, the Student Loan Refinancing Act of 2026 (H.R.9166), would allow borrowers to refinance eligible federal loans without incurring origination fees as a result of refinancing. These proposals are not yet law and are subject to congressional approval.
